Ms. Splosion Man Pinball Accessibility Review

Attention, possible splosion alert! That’s right, Zen Studios has done it again, and this time they’ve teamed up with Twisted Pixel to deliver one of the most explosive tables seen on Pinball FX2. Made exclusively for Xbox LIVE® Arcade, the Ms. Splosion Man table brings the elements that we know and love from other tables in the Pinball FX2 collection but with the unique twist and electric injection of Ms. Splosion Man’s personality.

Players are plunged into the crazy labs of Big Science, where overzealous experiments have now left the lab in disarray. With your help, Ms. Splosion Man must splode her way through a wide variety of challenges in hopes of freeing her male counterpart Splosion Man. Not to fear, she will have the entire conglomeration of gadgets that the lab has to offer in order to aid her in this quest. There are some missions to complete along the way and plenty of opportunities to stack up those combos. If players can surpass all of the obstacles the table will throw at them, they will end up in a final battle with Mighty Eternal and have an opportunity to reunite with Splosion Man and “restore the balance” sorta speak.

Some of you may already know that I reviewed the Captain America Table back in June, so I’ll start off by saying if you enjoyed the gameplay there and found it accessible to you, then you can expect much of the same experience here. What really sets apart each table in the Pinball FX2 collection is the insane attention to detail that goes into creating these “pinball worlds”. Let me tell you, Zen Studios and Twisted Pixel have really gone the extra mile to ensure you get a one of a kind experience using assets directly from the Ms. Splosion Man game.

The game has fully animated depictions of the following characters:

• Ms. Splosion Man is the star of the show and literally splodes all over the table.
• Scientists are trying to capture Ms. Splosion Man and thwart her attempts to rescue Splosion Man.
• Look out for patrolling Rollerbots moving up and down the lanes!
• Splosion Man makes a special guest appearance at the end of the final mission.
• The master of game modes, Mighty Eternal is the main boss of this pinball table.

In Single Player mode, there are 4 main checkpoints that lead up to the final battle and must be completed if players want a shot at the Mighty Eternal. Now, just because there are only 4 checkpoints, that doesn’t mean this is going to be a cakewalk. Players will take part in a series of Mighty Modes where the Mighty Eternal will stop at nothing to ensure that you do not succeed in reuniting the Dynamic Duo. You can expect Rollerbot Patrols, Barrel Blasts and even Electric Beams as just a few of the obstacles standing in your way from accomplishing their ultimate goal.

The Multiplayer modes in both online and offline are the same for all tables in Pinball FX2. Players can choose from 2 – 4 players locally and it’s a lot of fun. One of the modes that I didn’t mention in my previous review was Hotseat. Here, players take turns using the same controller and each turn ends when the active player loses their ball. I found this to bring out quite the competitor in me when playing against my friends and it’s great because as I mentioned up to 4 people can play. This mode is a good option if you have a bigger group with you because split screen is only supported for 2 players. For those of you who don’t want to party with friends locally, Online Multiplayer is a great option and let’s not forget that it allows you to video chat with up to four friends simultaneously, so let the smack talk begin.

If you’re new to the Pinball FX2 world and wondering if the game controls are going to work for you, allow me to give you a brief breakdown. The game primarily uses only 3 buttons to control the majority of actions. Players have a choice of either the Right or Left Trigger or Bumpers to control the flippers and the plunger is controlled by any of the face buttons or the Right Stick.

All those Pinball FX2 veterans out there know that there’s only one thing that matters when playing...getting the highest “Superscore”. Because the game doesn’t have any preset difficulty settings, increasing your superscore is the one thing that will continue to push you to new heights, and is one of the reasons the game is so addicting. The great thing I’ve found with the Ms. Splosion Man table is that I’ve been able to stack combos and get some pretty high scores that I haven’t been able to get on other tables. I’ve literally played for hours on end simply trying to top my friend’s superscore and it doesn’t get old. With the help of the Action Camera at the top right corner of the screen you’ll always be reminded who’s on top and be given important information regarding missions and table instructions.

Accessibility Issues/Concerns:

In terms of the number of buttons being used, this game does pretty well, not putting a huge demand on being able to push multiple buttons at once and with controllers like the Adroit Switchblade coming out shortly, players who previously had precision or motor issues will be able to get superscores that they couldn’t before.
Deaf Gamers who have played Pinball FX2 tables before can expect a similar experience with Ms. Splosion Man. Again, be sure to always watch the Action Camera and Dot Matrix for important instructions.
The Ms. Splosion Man table is bright and vibrant, using a lot of pinks and blues, and although this should not be a factor in affecting the overall experience for colorblind gamers, it is something to be aware of.
At a Glance

Mobility: As with all Pinball FX2 tables, players with motor impairments or precision issues can expect similar gameplay. That being said, the game requires very few buttons to play so it is easier to adapt controls because of this. Recommended score: 7/10

Hearing: All table missions are displayed in either the Dot Matrix or Action Camera. The user can also adjust the size of the dot matrix in the options. Recommended score: 8/10

Vision: The Dot Matrix on this table is dark purple on a dark background so it may be hard for some players to make out the instructions. Recommended score: 6/10

Overall: Zen Studios in partnership with Twisted Pixel has created a really fun table. Plus with the ability to get an extra 50 GS and achievements such as “Kick It!” and “You are all-Mighty!” why wouldn’t you want to add this to your collection? The table is 240 MSP on Xbox LIVE® and will be available on August 31st...If you’re still not sold, you can download Pinball FX2 on its own for FREE to see if it’s the right game for you.
