Press Your Luck Game is a modern throw-back to a game that premiered in the early 80’s on CBS where three contestants battle it out by collecting spins and answering off the wall trivia questions and then use their earned spins on an 18-space game board full of cash and prizes. But in order to win they must avoid the dreaded whammy. The person who pockets the most cash and prizes wins.
I love this game because it makes feel like you’re on a game show and its super simple to play. All you need is a Wii mote and some friends with some pop culture trivia knowledge.
The best part of the game is the whammies! The game has over 50 whammy animations; this includes some newly-created Whammies (mostly hilarious) as well as throwbacks to some Whammies used on the original show. The game play is nearly identical to that of the original show as well. The question round has been simplified somewhat to make all questions multiple choice which makes it easier for all involved and encourages cooperative play.
As far as accessibility my only complaint is that the Wii mote can be somewhat touchy when answering the trivia questions to earn spins. Also, sometimes when stopping the game board the reaction time can be delayed but it works if you slam it with a small amount of force. Just having to use the Wii mote makes it perfect for the one handed or two handed gamers. But this can be easily overcome by applying a little more pressure or placing the controller on a flat surface and guiding it slowly.
Another great thing about the accessibility is that people with hearing impairments can play because the game full-supported with text as well as the sound. Sometimes when I am playing with a group of friends I turn off the sound so we can enjoy the group effort that game offers and enjoy each other’s company. I like the fact that you do not compromise the gaming experience with or without the sound.
Colorblind individuals may experience some difficult when seeing the prize board but this can be easily overcome because of text and images. A way around this is to lower the brightness and contrast on your television or raise the volume on the sound effects or the music so it is easier to hear the announcer as he states the prizes on the board.
Overall, this game is great for people of all skill levels and abilities and provides hours of entertainment with one player or a group of friends. Press your luck only uses the Wii mote and since the games are short, you can play one game or several within a matter of an hour. And finally I love that you can be a part of game show tradition from the 80’s.
