Are Brick and Mortar Stores Dieing?

Today Amazon.com reported that, when they were in stock, they sold 17 Wii's a second! Every year Amazon.com puts out a press release that states how their sales were during the holiday season. Well this years press release was a great one, in fact they said that this was there best year so far.

If you pay attention to these things, sadly I do, Target, Sears, and Macy's all reported that this year was a huge disappointment , the lowest sales in 5 years. Now keeping that in mind, combined with the Amazon news, something becomes clear, Americans wanted to make sure Christmas was nice at home, but as the economy tightens, they went shopping for bargains, and Amazon was able to give it to them. So the question one must ask, is the brick and mortar stores no longer able to keep up with the "Series of Tubes"? Are people just getting that comfortable with forking over the cash on web? I say, "Yes," but for the record, I do not have the data to back up, just an avid net user that is seeing the trend.

Here are the top 10 from Amazon Game Sales.

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Wii Nunchuk control
  • Wii Play with Remote
  • Wii Remote
  • Wii Charging Station
  • Wii
  • Assassin's Creed for the Xbox 360
  • Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training
  • Playstation 3 Wireless Sixaxis Controlle

I got a Wii for christmas. However, my mom had to a lot of footwork to find two, she got one for my sister too. She couldn't get one online so she started calling different stores and whatnot. After a couple of months of searching she found some at Sams Club and Toys R' Us.

Yes Amazon sold 17 a sec but its not like they had them in stock for more than 15/30 seconds when they would release them for sale.

They liked to release them at 11am/pm in my time zone and no less than 3 times they came up for sale for me after some mad refreshing on the site at 11. So I would get one in my cart mere secs after it posted. I already have all my info saved there cause I shop Amazon on occasion. I get all the way to the confirmation that I paid and instead get a "sorry this item is out of stock". So 3 times in less than the 15 secs it takes me to buy one - they are sold out
