Sometimes when you're looking for a new game to promote as good family fun there is nothing that can be a classic. This week's Ioo Web game of the week is Battleship from Pogo.com.  For those of you who don't know, Pogo is one of the leading websites for free Internet games. There is a premium subscription for those who would like to play games without advertisements or some exceptionally fun games, but most everything can be played free.

This week we take a look at the classic battleship. First, it is a multiplayer game, but there are millions of people that play on Pogo constantly, so finding a partner should be easy. In addition, this is an excellent game for the family to play together over the computer.

In case you have been living under a rock, the game of battleship is simple. You take five different sized ships and place them on a grid. Once you are done placing your battleships, you will take turns with your opponent selecting spots on the grid to attack.

You are given one shot for each ship that is still alive. This is usually called Salvo Mode; traditionally, each opponent takes turns firing only one shot.  Play continues until every ship is sunk.

However, as with most Pogo games, there is a twist.

You are given power ups that are gained by shooting clearly marked green tiles. If you shoot the correct spot you are given a random power up.

  • Torpedo - allows you to shoot one entire row in one shot until it finds a target
  • Heavy Shot - allows you one shot in a crisscross pattern that hits five different targets
  • Counter Attack - steal your opponent's power up
  • Reinforcements - adds an extra ship that gives you an extra shot

If you get more than one power up in any one turn, the power ups combine to give you Heat Seeking Missiles, which seek out a target on your opponent's side.

The entire game is done with the mouse so those with mobility impairments will be okay. There are no sound effects and all of the tutorials are in text for our deaf gamers.  There is a timer for taking shots, which can help with making decisions quickly.

Unfortunately, the colors of the power up squares are green and the color of the impacts are red.  You should be able to get around this relatively easy by paying attention to where you click as it is clearly marked.

So go out try to sink some Battleships!
