AbleGamers' web game of the week has quickly become one of my favorite puzzle games that I've experienced. These Robotic Hearts of Mine is a simple concept brought to another level through its game design. Similar to Braid, These Robotic Hearts of Mine weaves a story throughout the game, combining it with the gameplay aspect.
I won't spoil too much of the story, but it's about a couple's relationship over the course of their lives. You're only given little segments of story at a time in between each level. The gameplay consists of you clicking on cogs around the screen in order to place each surrounding heart upright. Naturally, as you turn the cogs any touching hearts will be rotated. The puzzles can get pretty intense, but luckily there is a retry button as well as a skip level button. The truly unique part is how well the story and gameplay elements tie together, especially for something so quick and simple. In the early stages it's harder to notice, but as you progress through the story you begin to see a correlation between what you're doing and what is being told to you through the short bursts of story.
The game's accessibility is great. You only need your mouse to play, as left click will do anything and everything you need to so one-handed players will be able to play easily. There are a "perfect" number of moves that is displayed, but you can turn those cogs as many times as you'd like. There's also no time limit and there's never any rush to complete a level. Even if you don't know how to complete a level there is an option to skip any level you want if you just want to experience the story or just to get past one stage that's holding you up. Colorblind players and gamers will low vision will be just fine, since similar colors are not used and the font is rather large. Hearing impaired gamers will also encounter no issues playing the game, since the sound plays no significant role.
