AbleGamers' Web Game of the Week: Pursuit of Hat

Pursuit-of-Hat-banner

I absolutely love games that are bizarre and strange and AbleGamers' web game of the week is just that. Pursuit of Hat is about a creature that, well, is in pursuit of his hat! The game is a puzzle/platformer with a lot of personality and is very endearing.

Pursuit-of-HatEvery level starts by separating you and your illustrious hat. Naturally, the only thing you need to do is reunite yourself with it. If you've played Team Fortress 2 enough, you know the exact feeling. The main mechanic, besides running and jumping of course, is your unique ability to tear off your own limbs to hold down switches or weigh objects down. In the end, you might only be a head rolling around on the ground! Since you have a limited amount of limbs some strategy is required in order to complete each level. Sometimes it's hard to gauge where your limb is going to land after spitting it out of your mouth, but luckily the game allows you to re-attach your limb by hitting the down key. The puzzles never really get too crazy, and the solution generally becomes clear rather quickly. If you are having trouble, the game provides a video walkthrough for you to watch and learn from to complete any level you are stuck on.

The game's accessibility is pretty straightforward. The game will be hard for one-handed gamers because the arrow keys are used to move and the space bar is used to jump. There are some occasions where quick reflexes are needed to reach the goal which will limit some gamers from getting passed those levels. There is a lot of cognitive ability needed for this game as well, serving as another barrier for certain gamers. Color is never an issue other than specific buttons, but that shouldn't be a problem for colorblind gamers since it's more trial-and-error anyway. Low vision gamers should be able to play the game easily as well, though it may be difficult to see certain buttons at times. Hearing-impaired gamers will be able to play Pursuit of Hat easily as well since the sound is never important to the gameplay.
