AbleGamers' Web Game of the Week: Culmination

Culmination-banner

Ablegamers' web game of the week is titled Culmination and you can play it on Kongregate. It's a beat-em-up style game that is extremely well polished and fluid. Many times the clunky controls will hold back a game like this one, but that is far from the case here.

The storyline of Culmination has you in the middle of what seems to be a revenge plot. Chasing after Vandheer Lorde, he constantly taunts you as he stays just out of your reach. You are the fallen Her of Earth who is now, according to the game's description, at his lowest point. The solid story is a nice way to tie the gameplay together, which in this case is really what matters. That isn't to say that the story is boring, it's just that the gameplay is so well done that its hard to not occasionally be annoyed when story gets in the way.

Culmination-fbThe gameplay consists of the arrow keys and WASD. The arrow keys move your character, with up to jump, and the WASD keys attack. The attack system is based off of building up combos with as little time as possible in between. You begin with only the A key being available as a basic attack, but as you hit more enemies the S, D, and W keys become available in that order. Each attack has a different property that you can use to string together for maximum effectiveness. It can be incredibly fun to create your own combos and see them work in tandem with the game's fluid animations and monochromatic graphical style.

Unfortunately, the game's accessibility locks out one-handed gamers. Since there's no way to remap the keys, you'll need one hand on the arrow keys and the other on WASD to play effectively, especially as the levels progress. Gamers with precision and mobility issues will likely find some issues with the platforming that the game contains. Hearing-impaired gamers and colorblind gamers will be able to play the game just fine, since sound isn't an issue and black and white is the default color scheme. Gamers with low-vision will also be just fine, as most of the environments and enemies are rather large.
