AbleGamers' web game of the week is Abobo's Big Adventure. Do you remember the big, bald enemy from Double Dragon? His name is Abobo and now his son has been captured! In Abobo's Big Adventure you get to play as Abobo in the ultimate NES homage.
While the story is somewhat barebones, that's not quite the focus of the game. Each level of Abobo's Big Adventure is taken from an iconic NES game, complete with the original music. You'll travel through levels from Mario, Zelda, Balloon Fight, and Megaman, just to name a few. This game is definitely one for the nostalgia buffs out there. The levels aren't exact duplicates however, as a certain sense of insanity is injected into each for some comedic relief from the sometimes frustrating gameplay. The game only uses two buttons and the arrow keys, just as if you were playing it on an old NES controller. They also have a tutorial on how to set up a joystick with the game, using JoyToKey, set up on the website. More than anything, this game just goes to show how much game design has changed over the past few decades.
Since this is one big NES tribute, the game is very difficult. It is not impossible for you to get hit multiple times in a row from an enemy without anything you can do to stop it. For a few of the levels, quickly tapping one of the buttons is required. For example, swimming in the underwater Mario level and flying in the Balloon Fight level both require constant tapping of the A key to stay up. Sound isn't necessary to play, so hearing-impaired gamers will be at no disadvantage while playing Abobo's Big Adventure. Colorblind gamers will be able to play the game just fine as well, as you never need to differentiate colors. Low-vision gamers my encounter some issues with certain levels, like the Balloon fight level where Abobo and the enemies are rather small on the screen. Quick movement is sometimes required, though precise aiming is not. Without using a joystick (and JoyToKey) one-handed gamers will not be able to play since the A and S keys are used in conjunction with the arrow keys to play. In order to execute your super move, you must press A and S together which may be difficult for some.
