Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds : Fun,Cartoon style golfing at its finest. So So For the Disabled

hotshots_golf.jpgHot shots golf: Out of bounds is a cartoon style golfing game that is quite popular among PlayStation fans.  The game is developed by Clap Hanz and published by Sony computer entertainment. The game can be found for $29.99 $59.99 depending on whether you buy this used of brand-new and what retailer you shop at.

 • Pros: Easy to control, everything can be done slowly and a high amount of replayability.
 • Cons:  Lacking in the subtitle department, some people may not like the cartoony style of the game.
The Issues with the total lack of Closed Captioning, and the issues with the no alternative control maps hit this game's review hard, when it was all said and done, the game got a 39 out of 100. You can see the break down herePresentation: The presentation of this game it is very lighthearted and goes at it with a laid-back pace.  The characters are varied once you unlock them and have their own personalities. There are a decent amount of different clubs and balls that you can get  which have different effects and bonuses. The presentation is pretty family-oriented and can be enjoyed by gamers of all ages. The characters are cartoony and comical. Overall this is a decent presentation for a family-friendly sports game.

Graphics:   The graphics are not spectacular compared to a lot of the next generation titles on the PlayStation three. This is not to say the graphics are bad, just not next-generation. The graphics are nice especially for the character models, the courses look nice but could have used a little more polish to certain features. This makes it look like a PlayStation two game sometimes. Overall the graphics are good yet slightly average compared to some of the other PlayStation three games. Decent graphics with beautiful  courses that could have used slightly more graphical polish.

Sound: There is nothing much to say other then the music and sound effects get the job done in a minimalistic approach. Everything is nice without anything special to distract you from taking your swings.

Controls: The controls are incredibly easy to pick up on your first few attempts if you are new to the series of golfing games. You can take your time to set up your shots and after you do that it's as easy as pressing one button three times to take your basic shots. The game has minimalist golfing controls that are easy to pick up right away. Excellent control scheme, although it would have been nice if you could have your keys mapped to whatever you want. There are no alternative control schemes to the default ones. Overall a very good control scheme minus a few minor complaints.

Replayability: There are decent amount of ball, clubs, character outfits and other characters to unlock by playing the different kinds of tournaments in the game. There are also bonus items for use in the online lobby. It is also fun to play against people online and just mess around having fun while playing with your friends. This game has a good replayability value, especially if you pick this title up used.

Accessibility: The game is somewhat lacking in the subtitle department usually what the characters are doing is visual. Also the golf caddies will tell you when you are putting the ball out of the green slopes. On the screen it will also visually show you which direction it is going and whether it is downhill or uphill. Deaf players will only miss out on a minimal amount of the game. You should still be able to enjoy this game without any hearing.  Although this might take a lot away from some players who like to know everything that's being said on screen. You can take your time to set up the shot you wish to take and then it is a matter of pressing the X. button three different times to take the shot.

There is minimal tracking needs required for this game, you only need to have timing of the X. button and a direction on the digital pad at a certain point to get the most accurate shots. The game makes use of a lot of visual cues which is good for gamers who cannot hear that well. What makes this game very accessible for some people is the slow yet fun pace of the game. The game is very simple to play for most players, yet it has an incredible amount of depth. There is an advanced shot mode that requires you to watch the characters movements and a little round circle to take the shot. This mode is completely optional except for a couple tournaments which really do not matter at all to unlocking new things and progressing through the game. You can choose advanced shots respect to the easier normal shots. I personally preferred the normal shooting style. This is a golfing game that most people can enjoy with minimal physical effort in planning it.

Closing comments: In my personal opinion this is a very accessible game to some of the disabled gaming community but for one handed and deaf gamers this game is not as accessible as it could have been. I honestly had a lot of fun playing this game and never found myself stressed out, even when I completely botched a couple holes. Some people may not be able to get over the cartoony look to the game but it's really entertaining sometimes with some of the characters visual antics. Absolutely worth checking out if you like golf or casual sports games. Although this is not the best golf game on the market, it is still a lot of fun and entertaining.

Enjoyed the review, Kit - been keen to find out about this one. Can you complete a course using just the X button? Is the EASY mode still intact (no hook and slice)? Also - why no good for one-handed gamers? I'd have thought it was quite managable judging by the previous Everybody's Golf / Hot Shots Golf games.

I do not see any kind of easy mode under the options. The reason I think it's not that good for one handed gamers is that you have to use the D-pad at the same time to do backspin and top spin etc.

You can do the courses using just X up until the expert courses.
