As with most Americans, it was short lived and while I never really went back to my old eating habits, I did fine myself sitting in front of the computer more and more. The gains I had made slowly vanished as I sat for hours on end working away at this and that.
It does not help that I am disabled, but this weight does not help the disability at the same time. As some know, I had a major back trauma in the military that did some major nerve damage to two of the three nerves that go into the left leg. The leg is weaker, and I am missing a lot of feeling in much of it, but it can move okay. The fact that I am lugging around this extra weight is not helping me one bit, so it is time for it to come off.
So I would like to introduce our new segment, “Bill Gates was Right, I am Fat!”
Here is how it is going to go down. Four times a week I am going to work out. I am going to use all of the tools available to me starting with the Wii Sports and go from there. Why the Wii, well because it is fun, I can do it at the AbleGamers world headquarters, and I can document the outcome. I will record what I do, give you the stats and create a post that will go post on Monday.
Games for Health will be held May 25-27 in Boston Mass this year. AbleGamers is hosting the “Game Accessibility Day” event there. I want to, no, I need to drop 25 lbs by that date. AbleGamers will be proud to have my mug representing us after the Wii gets done with me.
So today gets me started. Day one!
Weight, not great, 274lbs, the Wii said 267 so I will post both. I did the “My Age” and it was not good. +7 years. I am 35; it said I have the body of a 42 year old. Impressive, eh? I gave Wii Fit 30 minutes of workout time today and I earned 17 minutes of fun time.
You are welcome to leave a comment and tell me what you think, poke fun of my fatness, or maybe even a kind word of support.

I skipped the Wii fit and went straight to EA Active, but I do not know how accessible it is as it has a lot of running and leg exercises. What I have learned about exercising is once you get into the habit of doing it, it actually becomes kind of fun in a way that you miss it if you cant do it. I am sending you all my happy thoughts and good luck feelings! You can do it! :-D Love Love Jettychan
I had a similar problem, but in my case I was majorly under weight. I used Wii Fit and exercised on my own on the side. I also increased my protein and carbohydrate intake. In around two and a half months I reached my goal weight of 190 for my height, which I have stayed at since (give or take 5 pounds off and on. I started at 134, which was, for me, a disgusting appearance. You can do it Mark, just keep at it and good luck.
I do it another way: I have a simple cycling machine under my desk. I paddle while on the computer, and there is a home trainer in fornt of the tv/console so i can do some work while i play.
I find I'm more inclined to work out this way, because the main problem with only working out is that it bores me to tears.
Im totally with you Markie! 10 years of steroids have been good for my MS but not so good for my weight. Im gonna try to lose it with you.
I will probably have to try something other than wii fit since the board and I dont get along. My husband would be very unhappy if I loose my balance on the board and crash into his new tv.
Im going to go look at other options at the store this afternoon I think.
So Im right there with you hun! We can do it! Woot!
Thank you all for the kind words. I worked out for the 3rd day in a row (I think that is a first for me). I will post some pics and maybe even a video. Today I did a waste twists in the "Haha mess with the disabled guy" part of the workout. As I am there standing on my left leg (the one that is messed up) twisting around, the Wii says, "You are not well balanced, try to hold the pose"
hehe, thanks Wii, you did in 5 mins what it took my docs a few days and lots of tests to learn
THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT, I will make you proud. Steph, I am with you... get in on the Wii FUN.
BTW: One of my friends who is in the know said that EA Fit (or whatever it is called) would be a better use of my time. Thanks for the tip Brian!
You know, I would like to make down to Boston in May, I only live a in South West New Hampshire after all. On top of that, I am also having issues with weight management, the VA tried to give me an exercise tape and my primary care and the spinal cord injury clinic had a really good laugh along with me...since almost all involved the type of movement I should avoid unless I enjoy doing faceplants!! Anywho... Mark, I need to lose 25 lbs myself, that would put me at my close to ideal weight, I weight just shy of 200 lbs nows, so I think I would like to join you in this little endeavor and try and drop 25 lbs by the end of May as well, I like bandwagons, more fun than going it alone =)
Nice to see you making progress already! If Wii Fit is working for you so far, stick with it. Later down the road as you get to be in better shape/increase stamina, I'd definitely look into EA Sports Active because it literally kicks your ass and makes you sweat like crazy.
Will drop you a note this week re: g4h and stuff. Keep up the good work!
Brian, I did get it and you are right. I did one of the "20 min" start workouts and thought I was going to die! My thighs still burn from all the squat thrusts. Thanks for the tip.
I am going back and forth, given my disability I like some of the balance games that Wii Fit has and I love the step class thing
