speed-kittens-2

Speed Kittens is the first game from Grey May LLC, and is nothing but pure fun. Zeppelins are coming to steal the kitties’ milk, so it’s up to you to help them safeguard it. Kittens fly across the screen, and you can catch them and throw them - either into a zeppelin to destroy it, or into another kitten to increase your points multiplier.

Speed Kittens

Speed Kittens is the first game from Grey May LLC, and is nothing but pure fun. Zeppelins are coming to steal the kitties’ milk, so it’s up to you to help them safeguard it. Kittens fly across the screen, and you can catch them and throw them - either into a zeppelin to destroy it, or into another kitten to increase your points multiplier.

Flinging a kitten is as simple as tapping it and dragging in the direction you want to throw it. The farther you drag, the faster it will fly, irrespective of how fast you do the motion. Tapping the cats requires precision and the Big Cats fly across the screen quickly late in the game requiring fast reflexes to grab them.

There are three types of kittens at the start, but more are available for unlock by earning milk cartons. The higher your score, the more milk cartons you earn to unlock new kittens, scenery, and power-ups. Each powerup can be used only once per game, and each power-up is different. One simply destroys all the zeppelins, while another rains cats from the sky. There are other ways to clear the chaos and zeppelins as well. When two Big Cats collide, the entire board clears for a few seconds. Big Cats can also hit smaller cats at great speeds to destroy any zeppelins getting away.

The game starts off slow, but as it progresses, the zeppelins move faster. Further in the game the zeppelins move so quickly that you have little time to fling a cat into them. A good chunk of the destruction is random and happens out of your control. The kittens bump into each other, and once that happens you can no longer grab and toss them. This often creates an amusing chain reaction, with cats flying across the screen in every direction. This can create mass chaos on screen, although the zeppelins and kittens are always easy to spot, and the game only uses color for power-ups. Power-ups are colored circles with a small icon in the middle of the circle which is difficult to see, although when they fall it does not matter which power-up it is because they are all good.

For gamers that want a calmer experience, there is a practice mode which has unlimited lives. You can try new strategies and just have fun. There is no pressure to get every last zeppelin, and you can learn the game’s physics to better launch your cats next time.

The game requires no sound to play, although the sound effects of kittens meowing with jetpacks are sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. In addition, Speed Kittens is playable one handed, provided you have a place to rest the iPhone.

At a Glance:

Mobility: Speed Kittens requires precision to tap the smaller kittens, but other than that gamers should be fine. The zeppelins move faster as the game progresses, demanding faster reaction times to grab a kitten and toss it. Most of the time however, a kitten will hit the ship without any player input because there are no kittens onscreen. Speed Kittens is playable one handed provided you have a place to rest the iPhone. Recommended Score: 8/10

Hearing: No sound is required to play. Recommended Score: 10/10

Vision: At times the screen is full of cats although it is never hard to see. The font is sometimes crowded in the menus, although the game itself should not be a problem. The icon in the powerups ball is hard to see and power-ups have different colors to help distinguish them, but they are all good so there is no real need to distinguish them. When you select them from the pause menu the icons are much larger and easy to see. Recommended Score: 8/10

Overall: Cat lovers rejoice! A top notch game featuring the felines is finally here. Speed Kittens is a fun game that is easy to learn and very addictive.
