{sidebar id=3}{sidebar id=1}Whether you call it a computer desk, workstation, or gaming center, there are many types of "furniture to hold your mouse" on the market. The problem with the majority of these systems is that they are not built with the disabled in mind.
In fact, looking for the perfect computer desk can be a difficult process for the nondisabled, let alone disabled gamers and, depending on the severity of the disability, it could be almost impossible to find the perfect fit.
Nevertheless, you need not worry; helping you choose is where we come in. Many questions need to be asked before you purchase the perfect desk for your needs. Many of these questions have to do with adjustability and comfort:
In addition, the overall style and feel of the desk may be more important to you than the functionality. You might want your desk to be the envy of the gaming community or of anyone that may drop by.
Either way, I found a few cool, yet expensive, desks that could fit even the most meticulous shopper. The functionality may just outweigh the cost and if you are in a position to buy one of these or can convince your medical insurance provider the importance of needing a comfortable ergonomic desk; I would consider something in the following areas.
The ErgoQuest 500 made by Office Organix is an ideal option for those that are bedridden and want to use a desktop computer. It would also be a good alternative for people like me that spend the whole night working or playing a game.
There are some great features about this desk that stand out above the rest including the fact that this desk is designed to fit over a twin size bed. It has motorized legs that help to adjust the height of the tabletop from 28" to 57".
In addition, a motorized monitor tilt platform adjusts from zero to 55 degrees, which supports up to 150 pounds and allows for either one CRT monitor or up to six LCD monitors. The keyboard also tilts either up or down by 30 degrees. All of which are controlled by a push of a button.
The only negative thing about this desk is the question of how well it would hold up during an earthquake. One solution that just may work is to try putting weights over the horizontal stabilizing bar. However, altering the structural design and using a motorized desk in a way not recommended by the manufacturer is not recommended. Overall, this desk would be a good fit for most bedridden disabled gamers, but consult a professional about securing your rig if you live in a hazardous area.
The Gravitonus iClubby Workstation made by Gravitonus was one of the few desks designed with the disabled in mind. It comes with the coolest device called the Alternative Computer Control System (ACCS) that makes mouse control easier; it is a tongue-controlled directional command module. To help maintain comfort it constantly changes its position by moving in relation to the earth gravitational field vector.
The system also comes with three displays that are specifically designed to stay in you field of vision at all times; lessening overall eyestrain. In addition, the keyboard tray and armrests are adjustable to any position, which helps to reduce muscle strain on the neck, shoulders and arms.
For those that can use a mouse there is a tray at the end of the armrest that allows for an ergonomically positioned mouse. This insane rig even has its own lighting, a ventilation system in the seat that does both cooling and heating, as well as a 5.1 surround sound system with the subwoofer integrated into the back of the seat so the sound is felt not just heard.
I would say that this workstation is the premier system to fit all of your needs, if you happen to have enough money to purchase a small island.
The Emperor Workstation made by NovelQuest was styled after the tail of an emperor scorpion and has some great unique features. It has few similarities to the iClubby, like the built in lighting, THX surround sound and three built in monitors.
In addition, this system has an adjustable seat that reclines and the whole base tilts to provide ultimate comfort. The roof of the system raises up and down that allows the user to get in and out easily, and the monitors are connected to the end of the roof so they can be adjusted to any height. There is an onboard computer inside the base or if you need to use a laptop, you can dock one behind the seat.
There are many more cool desks but those are the top three. However, here are a few links to some other solutions that you should check out:
Desks and workstations play an important role in our everyday lives but for those of us with disabilities they are as important as a new car. In order for us to get the full enjoyment out of our computers, we need almost perfect conditions.
The overall comfort allows us to spend more time doing the thing that we enjoy most and, having the most adjustability allows for our arms and other body parts to be in a good position that keeps our muscles from getting too tired.
If it would dramatically improve your quality of life, would you consider spending this kind of money on one of these rigs?
