Let us begin by saying that while this device is widely usable by the public, including those with different types and degrees of disabilities, there is one slight problem that will affect a select group. If you are confined to a wheelchair and must use a headrest to keep your head stable then you will most likely have problems using the EPOC the way it was intended.
The concern that we have has a few implications and this begins with the overall placement of the headband itself. Looking at this picture on the Emotiv web site, you can see that the headband rests behind the head and sticks out an inch or more depending on the shape or size of your head. We found that when you put on the EPOC then rest your head against the headrest the whole device slides forward. The result of this is that the sensors never touch your head making it unusable, which is a direct result of the headband also not being adjustable. We are working on a solution with the head engineer from a large California technology firm that should alleviate this problem altogether.
In addition, we have been in contact with Tan Le, Cofounder and President of Emotiv and informed her of our concern. In a response from Ms. Le on this matter, she began by saying, "We have gone forward with this (the current) design because it has been extensively tested and achieves a stable, easy mechanical fit for most head shapes and sizes." This is understandable, since the headband issue did not arise until recently. Moreover, a lot of time, money and effort went into the current design.
She then went on to say (concerning the headband issue), "This is certainly very valuable information for us indeed." Adding, "Given your feedback, we will discuss internally and consider this issue for future design iterations."
We will continue to work with our engineers, and Emotiv, to find a solution to the problem for disabled gamers that are bedbound or confined to a wheelchair. AbleGamers understands how important usability issues are, and we are working very hard to find a solution that will allow everyone to enjoy this groundbreaking invention.
Given this information, it should not stop those of you that want to purchase the EPOC if you are not affected by the headband design issue. With this device coming out just in time for Christmas, it would be a nice gift for yourself or someone special. Also, if you've been a good boy or girl this year maybe Santa will deem you deserving of one on that special day.

A simple solution would be to fill in the gap between the headband and the back of the individual's head. This should prevent the device from shifting forward when it is pushed against a head rest. This could be done by adding padding to the back of the headband for a customized fit.
I'd assume everyone would want to add padding to the headband to ensure a tight fit and therefore a better connection between the electrodes and the scalp. Emotiv should probably supply some good adhesive padding with the device.
