  • About me

.I like arts, movies, playing games, composing music, science fiction, death metal, writing short stories and many more things. My first contact with computer games was in the early 80s when my father bought a Commodore 64 home computer. It was followed by my own Commodore 128, Amiga 500, DX2/66, a borrowed Apple Mac G4 dual, Athlon 1800, Intel Q6600.
    I like cats.
I like German, Italian, Asian, Austrian and Romanian food as well as American chocolate cookies.
I hate when social behavior is confused with socialism and when socialism is cconfused with communism. But what I hate most profoundly is when social behavior is confused with communism.

I guess you already know this link: archive.msdn.microsoft.com/wsrmacros

    This one is quite thorough:
    sto-forum.perfectworld.com/archive/index.php/t-89634.html

There is also a way to use Autohotkey for custom voice commands. Here's a link that might be useful for you.
    speechwreck.blogspot.de/2010/08/my-trip-...ition-lane_8340.html

The Autohotkey manual and community will also give good insight into speech commands.

I for myself haven't been talking about games being accessible or not but rather about degrees of it. A game may be horrible for players with muscular dystrophy but it's closed captions will be a plus for people with hearing issues. It's not about what a game doesn't allow but about what it can do. I don't think that a developer will advertise a game by claiming functionality features it doesn't actually have. Doing so would demage it's overal reputation and therefore I believe that it is a self-regulating issue. A good way of measuring accessibility features might be a voting system that lets players give a percentual estimation of a game's accessibility. It would help possible customers to decide wether of not a title fits his/her needs. If two customers say that closed captions are done perfectly and fivteen give it a mere 75 percent the closed captions indicator shows the respective value. There is also the possibility to use a grading system like in school.
In order to standardize the rating system there would be the need for clear descriptions of what a possible rating will mean.

A+: Captions are there for speech and audio cues and different speaking persons are distinguishable. They also give directions where the noises originate from. The background doesn't interfere with readbility.
A: Captions are there for speech and audio cues and allow to distinguish different speakers. They give directions where the noises originate from.
B+:Captions are there for speech and audio cues and allow to distinguish different speakers. The background doesn't interfere with readbility.
B: Captions are there for speech and audio cues The background doesn't interfere with readbility.
C+: Captions are there for speech and audio cues
C: Captions are there for speech and the background doesn't interfere with readbility.
D+: Captions are there for speech only.
    D: No captions.

It appears to be a bit complicated but perhaps we could develop a practical procedure for the evaluation of standards that make it possible to rate accessibility.

  • georgli replied to the topic 'Developing Accessible Games' in the forum.
Well, that's a good idea to make games with accessibility for disabled gamers in mind.
Did you read the Includification PDF from Ablegamers? It contains some top notch info on how about the various possibilities to increase accessibility. I have never been part of the development process of a computer game but I'm interested to contribute, though it's rather ideas than code or anything. I also have plenty of ideas what games one could make. I'm a little into music but if it is good enough to be in a game I don't know. Contact me if you are interested

  • georgli replied to the topic 'Electron Arts's Origin vs. Valve's Steam' in the forum.
I didn't even know that EA has an own marketing platform going but honestly I don't give no nothing about that. After checking it out a bit more I must admit that their prices are just ridiculous. 19.9 US$ for Mass Effect 1 is laughable.
Granted, Steam has some things going on with their strategy that might be a turnoff or so but I don't know too much about that either. There have been discussions that the Steam model kills developers because of the constant price-fight and I can see where part of these accusations may be true, but that's all I know about it.

What I really like with Steam is Greenlight be cause many of the games there are not overly commercial , yet innovative and it is possible to comment on the development process, discuss features and the thing that I like most: encourage the developers to take accessibility into account.
I have been in contact with Steve of Marc of Ablegamers and I was asking wether or not it'd be an idea to approach Valve in order to suggest that the inclusion of information about the accessibility directly at their shop-page. But Ablegamers had already been in contact. Turned out Valve wasn't interested. They do mention support of a gamepad and I believe it cannot be so hard to have some icon or keyword for colorblindable, customizable keys, audio cues, closed captions, windowable, etc.

Well, that's the reason I keep talking about accessibility, customizable controls, audio cues and options for colorblind gamers, right in their forums. The reaction from users and developers mostly are friendly and supporting. I think that it would help a lot, were there more disabled gamers to demand accessibility in games. The more developers and users see us, the better. I even add the link to the includification website.

If anybody wants to join in, please do, it will be heard.

I don't think there are computer solutions that make it possible to adapt the controlls of a Nintendo DS. For the XBOX360 there are some things that might help but it will require you to spend some money, depending on the way you want to go. If you want to keep the XBOX360 there is for example the XIM-Edge, a sophisticated piece of hardware that makes the PC cappable of sending control commands to the XBOX. That way your son would be enabled to use any accessibility tool for PCs and use it with the game console.

The following things would require a PC

    XIM-Edge www.ablegamers.com/General-Game-News/hav...f-accessibility.html
    Voice recognition for games www.dwvac.com
Interface for switches that can be placed wherever you need them www.stealthswitch2.com/products/stealthswitch3/ or www.disabledonline.com/products/disabled...sb-switch-interface/
Possible switches for the Stealthswitch interface www.disabledonline.com/disabled-online-s...es/general-switches/
It's not difficult to use for example arcade pushbuttons and to solder mono-jacks onto them. Selfmade switches cost between 5 and ten dollars.
Arcade pushbuttons that could be used (OBSN-series requires very little force) www.focusattack.com/buttons/sanwa/?sort=featured&page=3
Possible trackball usable with toes www.disabledonline.com/products/disabled...-joysticks/bigtrack/

I like your videos a lot. I'm also interested to make a German translation of the subtitles in your accessibility-tool introduction. How about videos of some of your other games? It's very interesting what you explain in the videos, specially the text in Assassins Creed. By the way I'm "Scheffin" on Youtube. And, do you play Borderlands 2?

What video tool did you speak of?

    Hello,
I found out that the Header with the bus has 2.668,97 KB (2.733.024 Byte). That's quite something. Even a 99 G quality JPG will have much less. Perhaps you want to look into this. :)
