We met our friend Giddeon at the AbleGamers Accessibility Arcade in Atlantic City, New Jersey. When he first sat down with the AbleGamers crew, Giddeon didn't want to play any games. He told us that with his disability gaming was difficult. Giddeon has a rare disease that caused the growth of his arms .. Read More

The End Has Begun

The end has already begun, are you ready?  Tom Clancy's EndWar is a new revolutionary title from Ubisoft in which the entire battle can be controlled through voice command.  The timeline is set at the beginning of World War III, in the not too distant future.  It is your charge to control your forces to protect the world in a command style RTS for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this November.

What makes this game unique is the fact that every control can be done by voice command.  By holding the right trigger down, you issue voice commands directly to your forces on the field.  Mastering key phrases such as "all tanks report to sector alpha" or "gunships2 attack hostile at section 6" will be the only thing stopping you from defeating the forces of evil.

The game will feature seven distinct troop types for you to command.  Riflemen act as your ground troops, but can be decimated by tanks.  Combat engineers are your typical grunts; they can lay minefields and takeover enemy technological points but they are slow and easily killed if left without cover fire.  Tanks are your typical heavy armor, these bad boys will destroy any building or ground troop platoon, and unfortunately, gunships own them.  Gunships are the terror of the skies; they can transport riflemen behind enemy lines or destroy a tank brigade, unless of course they run into enemy rifleman who can shoot them down.  Transports are heavily armored boxes on wheels which are used to get your ground troops from point a to point b intact.  Artillery is the backbone of any war, capable of destroying anything on the ground from buildings to entire attack forces, except they are vulnerable due to their immobility.

Finally, we have command vehicles, command vehicles allow an overview of the battle in real-time.  The grid overlay can be used to command multiple points of the battle at the same time.  These vehicles are most important for keeping control over your regime.

According to Ubisoft, literally every aspect of the game is controlled by voice command.  There will most likely be options to control some aspects directly from the controller itself but the main point of the game is to issue voice commands.  The game will be designed using an alternate unreal3 engine, which means that the 3-D environment will be distractible.

The game will be played in a 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4 game environment such as Command and Conquer.  There has been no campaign mode announced but the game is not yet finished.  Ubisoft has decided to bundle microphone headsets along with the game for those that do not own their own headset.  The voice recognition software designed for this game has an accuracy rating of up to 97%!  Ninety-seven percent is a way above the typical Microsoft Vista recognition accuracy, which is around 85 to 95%.

It is an unfortunate that the technology does not work on the menu. I am disappointed in that. Regardless, it's a nice step forward, perhaps next time the menus will be included for the disabled.

I recently contacted US and asked them the following regarding voice command and End War.

Good morning. My question? In "End War" can I control this game completely hands-free -- via voice command? I am disabled, do not have the use of my hands, and have been looking for a game requiring voice only. I'm hoping I've found that game!

Their response ...

Sean,

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to navigate the menu system using voice commands. A controller will still have to be used in the menus. We apologize for the inconvenience.

So, it seems navigating the menus is the sole issue here. Is there a hands-free solutions to this?

Most kindly,

Sean

Wow, that's great I'll have to check that out. I usually don't like that genre of game but who knows, if I could actually play it with that type of accuracy. It's worth add9ng to my "Games to buy when I get a PS3" list. Thanks!
