Hey AbleGamers, here is a newsflash for you; gaming is important to Americans and is a great healthy outlet. Shocking, eh? While social network use is the single most significant occupier of Americans' online time, a June study indicates that playing games has climbed up to grab the second place spot away from email, which held the runner up position last year.

According to Nielsen, gaming was one of the only categories that were not eroded in social networking's wake. Good news Ablegamers, Facebook and Farmville have not taken over the world yet! Social networks do, however, represent 22.7 percent of online time in June, up by nearly half from 15.8 percent during the same period last year. Yes, the cows and cute cuddly puppies of Farmville still have a chance of taking over our internet habits.

Online game time rose 10 percent year-over-year to make up 10.2 percent of Americans' internet use in June, up from 9.3 percent. This is because of MMO’s like World of Warcraft.

That's in stark contrast to email, whose use fell 28 percent to 8.3 percent, and instant messaging, whose use fell 15 percent to 4.0 percent. This is due to most people doing all of their communication via social networking and wants all their information in one place and wants it fast.

“The internet is a window to the world but still most users only use it for three things, social networking, playing games, and emailing leaving a whole lot of other sectors fighting for a declining share of the online pie," said Nielsen.

On Smartphones the situation is quite different; a massive 60 percent of online time is spent using email, followed by 11.7 percent on web portals and 10.5 percent on social networks. Many consumers believe that games are hard to play on such a small screen with limited or cumbersome controls and this is especially true for the Ablegamers community. You need a lot of dexterity and precision to play games on a phone.

Now, for some shocking statistics if we only had one more hour of the internet to use in our entire life here’s how it would breakdown according to According to Nielsen :

cow_clickerOverall, social networking and games would get the most time with over 22 minutes. This just goes to show how important gaming and social networking is to us as society. As a disabled person, I use social networking as way to connect with friends and family because I am not always able to leave the house when I want or see the people I need or want to see all the time.

We are all so busy that the ability to connect instantly is great but also can be a negative because we are losing the art of how to communicate face to face.

Now, since joining the Ablegamers family I have come to realize that gaming is not only a wonderful therapy, it is also a way to connect with people and form life-time long lasting relationships! It has been 6 months since my first day at Ablegamers and I have loved every minute of it! Once again, thanks for welcoming me with open arms!
