Waxwings replied to the topic Re:Finding a way to play an FPS as a quad in the forums.
I have seen quite a few people who have decent arm control, but not much in their hands/fingers successfully use joysticks for wheelchair control. For most wheelchairs, you can switch out the top of a joystick with a wide variety of shapes and sizes. There are T-bar type shapes, Y shapes, large balls, long sticks, etc.
Obviously, joysticks for computers aren't quite the same, but I wonder if something could be hacked together so that you could set your hand down into a Y shape, or onto a U or T shaped handle, and then use arm movements to control the joystick. Then you could map the axes of the joystick to whatever keys you like (or use an "atari style" stick with a switch interface if that doesn't work). This page has a few of the handles I mentioned: http://www.southwestmedical.com/category...ick-Accessories/1279 Something like this: Kit and Steve know more than I do, though. You could definitely make a Kit-style controller with four of those lever switches, but instead of putting a small bottle cap in the middle for a finger, you could put a jar lid in the middle to set your hand into/onto. Then you could move it around with arm movements. I wonder if the 2-gram switches would be too sensitive for that sort of larger, gross movement. It would be worth playing around and trying things out. |
