A Puzzle/Action game inspired by Spielberg's own search for a game that he would enjoy playing with his own kids, BOOM BLOX is designed specifically with the strengths and versatility of the Wii in mind. In it players can look forward to a fast-paced gameplay blending the simplicity of the wildly popular block game Jenga and the crazy complexity of a Rube Goldberg machine--devices that although performing very simple tasks are designed to do it by the most complicated means possible.

BOOM BLOX features over three hundred levels, a variety of activities, a cast of over thirty wacky characters, and an easy-to-use in-game editor that allows players to express their creativity. It’s visceral gameplay is perfectly suited for the Wii’s interactivity. The action gets going fast and the fun never ends as you throw baseballs, blast lasers, save wacky animal characters, explore cool worlds and more!... making it the ultimate Wii blox-buster for 2008.

Boom Blox Accessibility Review

The concept powering Electronic Arts' Boom Blox, a Wii-exclusive puzzle game guided by Hollywood director Steven Spielberg, couldn't be more fun and family friendly. You're challenged to disassemble, rearrange or completely destroy a series of Jenga-like block constructions by any means necessary with objects like baseballs, bowling balls, lasers, and bombs.

You can throw, shoot and even grab the blocks when applicable. The twist is that you use the Wii remote to interact with the blocky formations, which features astonishingly realistic physics. But since you can only use the Wii remote it takes an incredible amount of precision but the Wii remote's infrared pointer makes very pinpoint precision possible, enabling players to lock onto objects, pick them up and move them around.

One handed gamers will be the best for this game but others may struggle if you try to slowly remove blocks by pushing or pulling them rather than yanking them out like magician with a table cloth. The game has difficulty recognizing how hard you threw a ball sometimes, but for the most part the simple controls work just fine.

It takes a little while to get used to manipulating the camera and the game's physics, which are both inconsistent and sometimes touchy. You simply point at the screen and lock onto objects by tapping the A button, but you can swing the camera around by holding the B trigger, which is necessary as you endeavor to find the perfect angle for your throws, shots and grabs. Once you're locked onto a block, you can make your gesture without fear of breaking the hold.

You can pause throughout the game and the puzzles are short so it’s perfect for us that have to take breaks. The game play possibilities are endless because of the amount of puzzles, and you can always go back and improve your medal ranking to unlock even more content.

You can even become a game developer in Create mode, which lets you design your own levels using pieces unlocked during the single-player modes. Although it can be difficult to place items with precision, the interface is generally intuitive, and if you're patient, you can create just about any puzzle you can imagine. Once you've completed your masterpiece, you can send it to a friend.

Graphically, Boom Blox is good but not outstanding, what sets it apart is a good variety of themes and characters with real Physics. But accessibility is really lacking in the area of subtitles. Although the instructions are on each puzzle, they disappear as soon as you move the controller or hit a button. You’ll have to have a good memory or refer to the manual a lot.

Colorblind people have a lot of accessibility room here because within the options menu you can change the theme and modify the brightness and contrast for easier use.

At a glance
Overall, Boom Blox is one of freshest and most enjoyable puzzle games you can find in this generation and it is an especially good multiplayer title.
