About the AbleGamers Foundation

Since 2004, the AbleGamers Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, has served more than 56 million members of the disabled community by advocating greater access in video games. Today, AbleGamers is a leader in the development of equipment, programs and services to those living with disabilities, hardships, and quality-of-life issues that are a result of chronic illness or trauma. It is our goal to ensure that all people, regardless of their disability, can use gaming as a tool to have enriched social experiences with friends, family, and the world at large.

AbleGamers Web Game of the Week: Gravitee Wars

{sidebar id=1}Gravity Wars is the next installment in a physics game series from a developer named Funky Pear.  These games have been immensely popular on Kongregate but never quite this popular.  The original concept was of a golf game, which we featured in this vary column called Gravi-Tee.

Each game is set around planets of various size and gravity.  The first concept had gamers putting golf balls through a ring but this version takes things on a darker path – killing.  You will build a team of cosmonaughts to fight other teams for galactic dominance.

You advance through Gravity Wars’ 25 levels by killing increasingly more numerous and dangerous opponents.  With each new level, you are granted increasingly unique weapons from an ordinary sniper rifle to a nuclear bazooka.  You also earn money to purchase additional weapons, team member upgrades, and new team members.

Game accessibility

gravitee_wars_splashGravity Wars is played using a combination of mouse and keyboard, but it is entirely possible without the keyboard.  You move the camera around with one set of keys and walk your team around planets with the other – however, the camera automatically moves to wherever you need to shoot.

Each level is timed and will force you to forfeit your turn if you take too long.  Everything is described in large easy-to-read fonts with no audio cues.  In addition, the graphics are cartoon like with little actual violence.

The one problem will be for some colorblind gamers. The only way to tell the difference between your team and the others is by the armor color.  The spacesuits range between red, blue, green and yellow.

Overall, a very fun title with very good accessibility.  And, the popularity of the title has encouraged the developer to begin producing gravity wars online - a multiplayer version available early 2011.
