UFC Undisputed 2010 Game Accessibility Review

Overall, Yuke’s (developer) did a pretty okay job with the accessibility of UFC Undisputed 2010, or at least as good a job as was expected.

The only issue that visually impaired AbleGamers will likely come across is the problem with a white font being used and a dimly tinted yellow being used to highlight it - not high-contrast, and if you’re not paying attention, the cursor may not be the easiest thing to find.

This is sometimes dealt with by only allowing players to move up once or down once to answer yes or no questions, or other multiple choice questions. There are still those times when scrolling can be endless.

Even though the only accessibility option to be found in any of the game‘s options menus is the ability to turn on and off subtitles, the biggest part of the game, and most worthy of being subtitled was barren; subtitles, though not plentiful, are well done making use of an accommodating white font on a dark grayish-black background like those used for television subtitles. Not the letterboxed subtitles that I look for from all games, but the more TV-esque subtitles fit the game well as Spike TV, which is the UFC’s main TV outlet, is a small part of the game.

Unfortunately, Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan aren’t subtitled while calling matches, though both make appearances in other areas of the game like the “tale of the tape” and post-fight interview.

Otherwise, there’s the feedback from hitting and being hit, blood, and other ways in which the game lets gamers know what’s going on without the use of sound.

The game’s career mode features four difficulty settings which is the biggest accommodation the game makes for less mobile AbleGamer. Fighting is made up of button-mashing, stick-flicking, and some combination of the both. To make matters worse, not only are the face-buttons and right and left sticks used, but the shoulder buttons are often used in conjunction with the other controls.

At a glance

Hearing:
The ability to turn on and off subtitles is the only accessibility option in the entire game.

Subtitles appear as they would while watching television - white font on black bar background - font size could be larger
Cut-scenes are subtitled, but fights aren’t.

Everything that happens in the game has a visual or palpable action to go with it.

Recommended score of 8 out of 10

Visual:
All menus are easily read making use of easily read color and font schemes, though there is only a mildly colored yellow used in place of white font for highlighting menu items.

Television-like subtitles used throughout the few cut-scenes in the game - font size could have been larger.

Recommended score of 8 out of 10

Mobility:

Mobility throughout the menus is pretty easy.

Career mode features four difficulty settings.

Fighting is heavily reliant upon button-mashing, stick-flicking, and often a combination of the two.

Control scheme us unchangeable - not even a schematic to look at.

Control scheme too complex for even the most dexterous one-handed player.

Recommended score of 3 out of 10
