Assassin's creed 2: A family affair throughout the ages. With lots of killing!

The story takes place during the 15th and 16th century Italy for the most part and makes references to many historical people throughout the world. The story begins with you escaping from some kind of a laboratory with a blond haired lady who is a pretty tough lady. After your initial escape you end up at the headquarters of what you find out to be a group of what are called assassins. It explained to you that they need your help to find the "Pieces of Eden" which a rival faction called the Templars is also looking for.

You are also given a second reason of using a machine called the Animus 2.0 which allows you to relive your ancestors memories through your DNA. They go on to explain that learning all your ancestors techniques can make you a true assassin and be able to fight against the Templars.

I never played the first game in the series so I decided to allow the players to discover the plot twists and information on their own. This is the reason I want to be vague about the story.

The good.

Let's start off with what is beneficial for the various possible different players of this action adventure game. For people that are Deaf or have some kind of hearing impairment, you will find that 99% of the game has subtitles that are very easy to read even smaller screens. Menus make use of very large fonts that are also just as easy to read, if not easier than the subtitles throughout the game. Even the Italian words have their meaning subtitled as well. On your minimap a majority of places of interest have black-and-white icons that are fairly easy to distinguish from one another. Also you can select the different locations through a regular map and it will point you in the right direction via your minimap.

Another thing I notice when playing the game was when I was trying to make certain motion and jumps it would slightly correct my course if I landed close to the target. This does not mean that I did not fall! The game is slightly forgiving when it comes to free running. Overall the game has a few good points are the different types of ablegamers out there.

The bad

Here we have some of the things that could possibly be a nuisance or hindrance to certain individuals but in most cases not a deal breaker. Allow me to explain why earlier I said the game was 99% subtitled. The opening cut scene was lacking subtitles for some reason and it is a short scene that can be skipped without ruining the game. Now with that is out of the way, the next hinderance is certain missions and jumps may require a slight amount of precision to reach some of the hidden treasures and items scattered throughout the game. These are not required to beat the game but collectors may find it frustrating to have 100% completion. For the most part only a few nuisances for the disabled.

The ugly.(When your dog gets a hold of a can of chili.)

This is the biggest flaw in the game that some individuals should be aware of before purchasing or attempting to beat this game. During the game you learn an ability that is called Eagle vision and is essential for a considerable amount of your missions and the actual storyline. It allows you to see who your target is on a current mission in the middle of crowds of people. By holding down triangle you activate this alternate vision mode. Regular individuals will show up as a blue color, possibly aggressive targets show up as a red color and your target shows up as a golden/white color. This could be problematic to certain types of color blindness and should be considered.

On another note, when you are on a mission your target will sometimes show up on your mini map as a yellow crosshair and targets you are supposed to follow or protect are signified as a new crosshair. Also aggressive targets also show as red dots.
Finally we have a slight issue with right-handed players and this is regarding advanced combat and running. Pushing on the left analog joystick results in a very slow walk, holding down one of the triggers results in a ''jog'' and with the addition of X results in your characters sprinting at maximum speed. Advanced combat requires a lot more use of the controller and could prove to be a workout for certain individuals. Dodging for example requires you to press the trigger on the left side which will lock onto an enemy, after you do this you have to hold down a sugar on the right side and press the direction you want to dodge of the left analog joystick plus the X. button to successfully dodge incoming attacks. Counterattacks are very similar to what was just described and although it is not 100% necessary to finish the story, it will be extremely difficult to accomplish without advanced tactics.

My findings are that this game is not the most friendly to one handed players and players with certain colorblindness. I think this covers the accessibility issues of the game for individuals interested in trying out a very enjoyable open world action adventure game. The game is definitely worth checking out if none of these issues will stand in your way.

 • Ok semi OT question: How does it play? I own the first on pc, and without any kind of demo I am going to wait for the pc version of ac2. (I do not know about ps3, but on xbox 360 all the interesting cross platform games have no demo.)

But I am curious how the gamepad controls measure up in comparison with the keyboard+mouse setup. Is camera control smooth? How is aiming throwing knives and such?
