VVVVVV

Terry Cavanagh is one of my favorite indie developers and is the mastermind behind the platformer VVVVVV. This isn't a traditional platformer though, since the only way to change your elevation is to reverse gravity. This creates some very tricky scenarios that would be taken for granted in any traditional platformer.

The platforming gets very difficult during the course of the game and would normally require quick reflexes to get through many of the rooms. However, Cavanagh has gone to great lengths to include the disabled gamer. Within the options menu you can turn on "Invincibility" and "Slowdown" which will make the game playable to everyone. Slowdown in particular allows player to change the speed of the game to 80, 60, or 40 percent of the regular speed. Colorblind gamers will be able to play the game with ease since the graphical style and color choices make everything easy to recognize. The option to turn off the animated backgrounds as well as the screen effects are both included to help gamers with vision disabilities. There are no audio cues other than your character dying, which is already obvious to the player.

At a Glance
Mobility: The game will require quick reflexes, but it includes the options to slow down the game and make your character invincible so everyone can get through the game just fine.
Score: 10/10

Hearing: There are no crucial audio cues within the game, so hearing-impaired gamers can play the game easily.
Score: 10/10

Vision: The game includes options to turn off the screen effects like flashes as well as the animated backgrounds. Color is never an important issue while playing.
Score: 10/10

Overall: I think Terry Cavanagh deserves a lot of credit for including so many options for the disabled gamer within VVVVVV. Without these great options the game would be unplayable for many gamers, but with them included I can proudly award this game a perfect score.

Score: 10/10

It's been quite a while since I played this, so I could be completely wrong, but I *think* there was an option to put the game into "one switch mode" or something to that effect. I believe it was in the same portion of the menu system as the invincibility & slowdown options.
