Super Meat Boy is a tough as nails platformer where you play as an animated cube of meat who's trying to save his girlfriend (who happens to be made of bandages) from an evil fetus in a jar wearing a tux.

Our meaty hero will leap from walls, over seas of buzz saws, through crumbling caves and pools of old needles. Sacrificing his own well being to save his damsel in distress. Super Meat Boy brings the old school difficulty of classic NES titles like Mega Man 2, Ghost and Goblins and Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Japanese one) and stream lines them down to the essential no BS straight forward twitch reflex platforming.

Ramping up in difficulty from hard to soul crushing SMB will drag Meat boy though haunted hospitals, salt factories and even hell itself. And if 300+ single player levels weren't enough SMB also throws in epic boss fights, a level editor and tons of unlock able secrets, warp zones and hidden characters.

Super Meat Boy Game Accessibility Review

The gist of Super Meat Boy is that Meat Boy and Bandage Girl love one another. Dr. Fetus hates Meat Boy - so much so that Dr. Fetus kidnaps Bandage Girl. Meat Boy loves Bandage Girl so much so that he’s willing to go to horrendous lengths to get his Bandage Girl back, and Dr. Fetus is willing to go horrendous lengths to keep Bandage Girl from Meat Boy.
That same old story.

Team Meat did some cool stuff with Super Meat Boy. Aside from making a hero out of a block of meat and his nemesis a fetus in a jar, they made it so Meat Boy leaves a trail of meat juice wherever he goes including, but not limited to saw blades, walls, and of course, the ground under his meat.
Team Meat did some less-than cool stuff with Super Meat Boy, too. The biggest of which is making the game “tough as nails” or maybe more aptly put, “tough as a sea of syringes”. The game goes so far as to tell players it’s hard up-front, before buying even.

Let’s get to the accessibility; to start, this game is not dependent upon players being able to hear. Everything Meat Boy is going to have to deal with in his immediate future is on the screen, or soon-to-be on screen.
On the PC, Super Meat Boy’s controls use only four buttons: the right and left keys control movements right and left, the spacebar makes characters jump (tapping versus holding controls jump height), and the (left) shift key controls a sprint type movement. Basic controls, but with a stock keyboard, Super Meat Boy will be quite the task for one-handed players.
As mentioned above, Super Meat Boy isn’t the easiest game out there, and those with mobility impairments may want to (should) steer clear of this game for that very reason. The game often calls for timing movements and pressing two or three keys at a time at the correct moment.

Visually, there aren’t many problems with the game, the only issue that may be present is that the camera is pulled so far back from Meat Boy that he takes up very little of the screen, which could be seen as a drawback to some gamers.

At a glance

Visual:
Menus are very easy to read.
Camera is pulled back to an almost uncomfortable distance. (-0.50 point)
Some obstacles aren’t apparent until they force a re-spawn.

Recommended score of 9.5 out of 10

Hearing:

No problems.
Recommended score of 10 out of 10

Mobility:
Four key control scheme which is not remap-able. (-1 point)
One-handed players will not be able to play with a stock keyboard. (-1 point)
Two and three buttons are often used simultaneously. (-1 point)
Timing plays a large role in the game. (-1 point)
Game has no end unless players can beat every level. (-1 point)

Recommended score of 5 out of 10

Anyone considering this game REALLY should try the demo before downloading. I tried the Xbox 360 demo and couldn't get past the first three levels. It is VERY difficult, even at early levels, and I don't really have any hand or mobility / motor function concerns to speak of.
