Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West Accessibility Review

Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West is an online-only, multiplayer, third-person, class-based shooter. While it doesn't do anything that would be considered radically different than similar games, everything that Lead and Gold does comes together very nicely as a complete package. That being said, there are only about forty to ninety people currently playing online at any given time these days.

The only offline option is a Practice mode which serves as a tutorial to teach you how the game controls and what each game mode entails. Unfortunately, you are unable to create a private server and add bots to play around with; you must play against other human players. There are seven game modes available to play, usually involving picking up gold or TNT and bringing it to a certain destination. There is also the classic deathmatch mode, as well as a co-op mode that puts you and a buddy against waves of enemies as you try to steal sacks of gold.

The gameplay is pretty much what we've come to expect from a third-person shooter. Aiming and firing is done with the mouse while movement and actions are done with the keyboard. You can, however, remap any of the controls however you wish in the options menu. There are four classes to choose from once you're in a game, each with their own properties and a special ability. Holding down the left Alt key and then firing will activate the special ability which consists of things like setting traps or throwing dynamite. Each class definitely has their own distinctive feel and you'll likely find one that suits you more than the rest and stick to it. The game also encourages teamwork since each class emanates an aura around them that will improve a certain aspect for all of the nearby teammates. If all of your team is in one place, they'll all be receiving multiple benefits at once.

Accessibility Issues/Concerns

The default controls are completely remappable, including mouse sensitivity. One-handed gamers will likely have some issues playing the game with ease since there are so many actions to perform at any given time. Activating special abilities requires you to hold down one key while pressing another which some gamers may have trouble with. Precision and mobility are both highly required while playing.

The on-screen HUD is very well labeled, however gunshots are not given any visual indication. This means that hearing-impaired gamers won't be able to tell where the bullets that are hitting them are coming from. Other than that one exception, hearing-impaired gamers shouldn't have much trouble playing the game.

Teams are labeled in red and blue, avoiding any sort of color confusion for colorblind gamers. All of the on-screen notifications are clear and big enough that low-vision gamers won't have a hard time seeing them. It may prove challenging to see enemies that are far off in the distance, though. Menus are very easy to read.

At a Glance
Mobility: All of the controls are completely remappable and mouse sensitivity is adjustable. One-handed gamers will have trouble playing the game. Both precision in aiming and quick mobility are required when playing.
Score: 5/10

Hearing: When hit by bullets there is no visual cue, so hearing-impaired gamers won't know where the bullets are coming from.
Score: 8/10

Vision: The HUD and menus are very well labeled with large fonts. Team colors are red and blue, so colorblindies won't have any color confusion. Low-vision gamers may find it difficult to aim long distances.
Score: 9/10

Overall: Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West still has dozens of dedicated players that you can play with. It's nowhere near the amount of the big titles of today, but that small number is crucial for an online-only game. The third-person shooter nature of the game will prove to be a barrier for some, but the remappable controls will definitely salvage it for many.
