Accessible peripherals are becoming a hot topic on the market today. Ablegamers has been receiving word from all across the world about new and interesting devices to help various disabilities. Today is no different; we received word about a very new interesting mouse.
What makes this mouse so special? Simple: you move it with your toes! Toe Mouse is a brand-new peripheral being unveiled to help the disabled use their computers easier. Unfortunately, a lot of gaming/computer related peripherals are only disabled friendly by accident, but not this time.
Toe Mouse is specifically designed to be used by those with upper limb disabilities. Those with muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, etc., who may not have use of their upper arms but still retain some function in their toes will be able to use this mouse.
The designers made the mouse fit identically to a pair of flip-flops. All you do is place your big toe and pointer toe around the device, then use your toes to steer the mouse. Your big toe will be the left click and the pointer toe is the right-click.
The ergonomically design was created to allow your foot to rest comfortably while using your remaining strength to move the shark fin looking device, which actually controls the mouse pointer. The fin can be maneuvered both up and down, and side to side giving full 360 control.
This is particularly useful for those that have no access to a computer currently, but for those that do; this is just another additional device to make gaming easier. If you use a head mouse, one-switch setup, or multiple 3kg switch setup, the ability to use something with your feet will only add additional dimensions to what you can do.
Toe Mouse is wireless making it ideal for rehabilitation, bed, and wheelchair use. No need to worry about wires getting in the way of your mouse when you can just rest your big toe on the platform of this new mouse and go to town.
This unit is not currently available for sale, but we are working on getting a demonstration model to show you exactly how it works, and what other peripherals work in tandem with Toe Mouse without software conflicts.
Although, it is early to say but this could be a revolutionary tool in accessible gaming because it is the first peripheral designed and targeted specifically at the disabled gaming community. This may be the first sign of hardware companies realizing the disabled gaming market is ready to spend money for quality items that deliver on promises made in the advertisements.
Stay tuned for our first hand experience with this awesome little device.
