Colorblind AbleGamers, it appears that Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games are planning to take an accessible page out of Treyarch’s Call of Duty playbook as it appears that Black Ops’ colorblind options will be returning to the Call of Duty franchise while at the same time making its Modern Warfare debut in Modern Warfare 3.
In this week’s installment of Sledgehammer Games’ blog’s Question of the Week, colorblind gamer, Nick Prynn asks:
“I know it’s a long shot but i would like to know if the upcoming title, MW3 multiplayer has the option for color blind gamers. i.e... alternate colors like in Black Ops.
As a color blind gamer this will a big influence as to whether I buy the game.”
With an almost shockingly not-vague answer, Michael Condrey, VP and COO of Sledgehammer Games replied:
“Research suggests that as much as 6% of the general population suffers from Color Blindness, or more accurately Color Vision Deficiency. Men (9-12%) are 20x more likely to be afflicted than women (0.25-1%). Those numbers vary depending on which source you quote, but we estimate that nearly a million gamers are playing Call of Duty every day with this issue. I am happy to report that we are working on a Color Blind Assist option for Modern Warfare 3.
So start honing your MP skills, Nick. You won’t be able blame your red-green deficiency for all that friendly-fire come November 8th.”
Be it to reduce friendly-fire or monetary gain, we’ll see something similar to Black Ops’ colorblind options in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – the final chapter in the Modern Warfare trilogy on November 8th, 2011.
With hope, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 won’t make the same mistake Black Ops did where the colorblind options referred to are concerned; in Call of Duty: Black Ops, players needed to level-up in order to unlock an in-game option that has the potential to make the game easier to play. Sure, there is aesthetic value to changing the appearance of the reticle, but to have to squirm through the first twenty-five levels of a game before comfortably able to play the game is absurdly disgusting. If Sledgehammer Games wants to make an impact with this feature, they’ll make it a gun-customization players will be able to take advantage of from the time they game is first put into any player’s platform of choice. If this is not an option, colorblind players won’t be as happy as they could be – by that I mean me.
