TOPIC: Console Controllers

Console Controllers 1 year, 9 months ago #2938

Hello

Im Robin AKA MactasticMendez from www.acidmods.com i'm the owner of the site. we enjoy modding and one of my staff and friend moddedmatt has made a few custom controllers for people with disabilities heres some links to them:

We were wanting to do more of these custom controllers to help people as we believe that everyone should be able to game using whatever console they want, so we are doing some research and have a couple of questions for you:

1 - what games do you play on what devices?

2 - what would you change in a stock Xbox 360 controller to make gaming easier for you?

3 - what would you change in a stock PS3 controller to make gaming easier for you?

4 - what would you change in a stock Wii controller to make gaming easier for you?

5 - what are your main difficulties when when gaming?

6 - Whats your disability?

we would like to know your answers to these questions so that we can come up with and develop several designs for controllers that would help people with gaming.

thanks for all your help

That's fantastic work!

I've been working with a young guy who has muscular dystrophy, and has used an Xbox 360 controller for a long time to do everything from playing games to browsing the web and sending emails. Lately, his hands seem to be losing more strength and range of motion, and they are closed in more, making the Xbox 360 controller too big for him. I haven't been able to find something off-the-shelf that would work for him, and though I've hacked a few controllers, I don't have the experience to do much with a 360 controller, especially to the level of quality that you achieve.

I will try to get more information, or get him here to chat with you himself. His whole world depends on that controller.

His mother was hoping that I could get the two of you in touch via email. I can PM you her address, or you can PM me yours to pass along if you like.

They are really looking for something that might work for him, and nothing else has done the trick yet.

This has little to do with the OP, but I felt silly creating a new thread while there is one with this name.
Never knew about the macro/remap feature on this pad, so I imagine there are others that did not either.

Great work @Acidmods. I would like to see more stuff like this done. If I was able to start a controller drive or something, and mail you a bunch of controllers to modify for people. Would that be helpful? Drive down cost, etc. Let me know.

Hi Robin

I'm really keen on somehow wiring a bite switch to the L1 function on my PS3 so I can run and aim down the sites at the same time on CoD Black Ops. Could you help me out? I am a C6 spinal injury

Thanks
James

I am an amputee, left arm, with full function of my right arm and legs.

So far all of the development and interest on this board has focused on putting everything on one controller for use with one hand. IMO this is, while useful for many people, not optimal for people like myself, and very short sighted from a design perspective. Why focus on a single controller? I would like to see the controls split out into multiple devices that would allow you to use your feet, head, elbows, etc (see sooty3000's post). Primarily feet though. I have 2 functioning feet with 10 toes. I have had great success playing COD on the WII by putting thew Nunchuck on the floor and using my feet to move. Putting everything on one controller makes quick responses hard and is a recipe for carpal tunnel and other repetitive use/cramping injuries.

I am fortunate to be in a position to help with R&D and may even be able to get people at my company interested in a side project [We have many very smart folks where I work that love tinkering].

I am disabled from the chest down. No movement in my arms so I use a Mouth Joystick Sip & Puff Adapted Game Controller. I play lots of sports games (Madden, NCAA Football, NBA, FIFA, MLB The Show, etc.) Never no problems with them. I have issues with the other games. Like L2/R2 trigger sensitivity not working, holding multiple buttons, and no PS button. I am playing the Tomb Raider Legend game and it has the guns aim as either hold down or toggle. I use the toggle so I'm able to aim and shoot instead of free firing like most games. If you can make the controller have toggle switch for the buttons a lot more games can be played. I was able to complete GTA IV by free firing like crazy! I hope this helps! Feel free to ask me anything!
