I see there are sip and puff switches and voice software but what can a person do if they wear a mask that covers their mouth then that stuff used by your mouth becomes not useable. Anyone have any ideas for me so I can play games again? I have muscular dystrophy so I have no arm movement. I can move the mouse a inch in any direction and I could use my left hand to press a switch.

I think that you should talk to to Steve, he is a master at gaming with an inch of mouse to your name. I will make sure he sees this post.

Yeah, Steve would have far more insight, but I'm sure that anything from standard mouse setting changes to mini-joysticks or head trackers could help. And I have actually heard some good things about the old fall back of Morse Code.

I'm not Steve, but depending on your budget and head movement ability, the SmartNav along with an appropriate switch for your left hand would seem to be what you're looking for. At least you could then play some mouse games. You might even be able to get another switch for right clicking, which would open up more possibilities.

I hear you. I myself am in a situation similar to yours and I would really love to play Mass Effect 1 and 2, but I have a feeling that that is a bit of a pipe dream right now for us. I've been told that Mass Effect requires quite a few "buttons", which complicates things for people with our limitations.

You might think about trying the NIA for FPS games. I haven't used mine all that much, but I had some success with it in the limited amount of time I used it, mainly as a "twitch switch" for walking in portal.

If anybody has some other ideas for you, I will be interested also.

The NIA (neural impulse actuator) is a gaming device from OCZ that is basically a headband with 3 sensors that react to minute facial muscle movements as well as six different brain waves. It's actually a very nice idea, but unfortunately has a few implementation faults. The first of which is that it is not properly grounded, which has led to all kinds of makeshift grounding strategies. What worked for me was to have the main unit in contact with my skin, but it is enough of a hassle that I haven't bothered with it again although I haven't completely given up on it.

The most reliable part of the NIA basically detects when you clench your jaw. You can use this feature to "walk" in an FPS and if you have enough control, you can, by exerting various degrees of clenching, set thresholds for different key presses. You can also do this for "glancing" left and right (although it doesn't really work all that well) as well as the six different brain waves (if you can will yourself to control them, which is pretty much as hard as it sounds).

Hi Jay,

First, you could use your mouth. You could get an in mouth joystick that works with the tongue. combined with the oxygen it would probably dry you out a little bit but it's an option.

You can use 2.5 kg switches arranged like a clock to give you four switches. also, a QuadJoy can be operated by your chin and that would be another joystick. Muscle twitch switches are expensive but wonderful. It would cost you approximately $2000 to purchase a decent one and it would only give you one switch.

Do not buy the NIA It is a piece of junk. There are some people that would say otherwise but overall I believe it's a waste of money.

My personal opinion I would get a couple of 2.5 kg switches on a cutting board and a QuadJoy.
