Hello Everyone
I've been developing a system especially for hearing-impaired gamers called SoundSign. It involves an icon system that illustrates what sound effects are occuring where/when, giving an icon and proximity and directional information. I'm hoping that if people like it we can get it into some mainstream games.

For now, we've developed a game you can download and play to see how the technology works.

I wonder what would be a good compromise between the icons being obnoxious and in the way, and not being noticeable enough... I liked the demo video, but I had to start specifically looking for the icons in the lower right corner before I caught on.

I always found the system in the Half-Life based games to be handy. When you are taking damage from a certain direction, red lines/arrows pop up that are pretty hard to miss. It seems pretty similar to what you are doing with sound, and could serve as a good model. Of course, it doesn't have enough information (like what the sound is), but it might be of interest.
